CommEx (tm) Breathes New Life Into Windows 3.1 Applications

LEAWOOD, KS -- November 21, 1995 -- Cottonwood Software announces the release of CommEx v1.20, a Windows 3.1 add-on utility which adds file management functions to the file open and save dialogs of most Windows applications. CommEx (which is a short name for Common Dialog Extensions) replaces the common dialog DLL that comes with Windows 3.1, so any application which uses this DLL for its File-Open and File-Save dialogs will benefit from CommEx. (This DLL has been a standard for several years, so most modern applications use it.)

CommEx adds buttons to find, move, copy, rename and delete files, plus create, rename, and delete directories, all right in the file dialogs. In addition, a file information box gives you the size, time and date of any file you click on, and drop-down lists of recently-used files and directories for the current application and for all applications are added as well.

According to Bob Gollihur of ZD Net, "CommEx is an excellent and handy tool that can speed up your Windows file operations". By adding these commonly-used functions in the file dialogs, you can save a lot of time normally spent going back to the file manager or DOS to do the same thing. It can also help you keep your hard drive more organized, such as by letting you delete unwanted files whenever you see them (instead of trying to remember to do it later), and by simplifying the process of setting up directories when you start a new project.

CommEx adds these functions without requiring you to run a separate program when you start Windows, and there's no extra icon cluttering up your desktop. CommEx installs itself seamlessly into the Windows system, just like a Windows upgrade. Once it's installed, it will become an integral part of your system.

One major time-saving feature added in this release of CommEx is its file and directory history. CommEx will remember the last 25 files and directories opened or saved by each application. This makes finding and using commonly-used files as easy as clicking on the list. This is especially welcome with those applications that don't keep track of recent files or the last-used directory themselves. In addition, the last 25 files and directories used by all applications are listed, making cross-application file handling a snap.

Another powerful feature of CommEx is the find function. It lets you search for files using multiple wildcard masks, and you can search multiple drives (or up to 10 different directories on any combination of drives) at once. Even though it continuously shows its progress and displays files as soon as they are found, it's one of the fastest search engines around. When it finds the file you want, just click on it to plug it into the file dialog.

Said Gary Sumners, a satisfied customer, "This is the first piece of shareware I've found immediately useful and necessary! I installed the shareware, ran on for all of five minutes until it got the first use, and immediately realized I no longer had to run File Manager in the background! THANK YOU!!! CommEx is an excellent addition to anyone's software arsenal"!

CommEx works on any 80386 or better IBM compatible PC running Windows 3.1, 3.11, or Windows for Workgroups. CommEx may be purchased by check or money order directly from Cottonwood Software for $17 (includes shipping & handling within the U.S. -- add $2 for foreign orders).
